Suma

Say hello to...
The worker co-operative from Suma Wholefoods

Where are they from?
Elland, Leeds

What’s their story?
Suma Wholefoods was started in 1975 by delivery driver Reg Tayler. Reg and friends set up in the back kitchen of a house in Victoria Road, Leeds, from where they sold cereal flakes, dried fruits and brown rice.

These days Suma is a fully democratic worker cooperative with 150 members. Everyone receives the same net hourly rate of pay, no matter what their job or responsibilities.

Suma source all sorts of produce ranging from baked beans, to shampoo, to spaghetti. But whatever you buy, you can shop with peace of mind knowing that each item has been ethically sourced, is vegetarian, cruelty-free and has minimal environmental impact.

Did you know?
In the beginning Reg delivered his wholefood orders in between his ‘official’ deliveries for his boss, who knew what was going on but turned a blind eye even so.

See what Suma have to offer...
